The Great Famine in Kazakhstan (Asharshylyk). The Forgotten History

9/11/2024

Dmitriy Panto

While the subject of the Great Famine in Ukraine is widely known and studied, the history of this tragedy in Kazakhstan is still largely unknown to Polish historiography. In Kazakh, the famine was called Aшаршылық (Asharshylyk). This is the word that should be used to describe this terrible tragedy, just as the word Holodomor describes the tragedy of the Ukrainian nation during the Great Famine. This is a key word, a symbolic word, a warning word.

The history of the Great Famine in Kazakhstan is described by Dmitriy Panto, PhD, a certified curator at the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk

The summer pasture in southern Kazakhstan. Between 1865–1872. Illus. in DK854.T87 1872, part 2, vol. 1, pl. 35, no. 102 (Case Z) [P&P], Library of Congress Prints and Photographs
