The Personnel of the Polish Orphanage in Novy Oskol in Voronezh Oblast. From the Sybir Memorial Museum collection

This photograph, taken in 1945 or 1946, shows the staff of the Polish orphanage in Novy Oskol in Voronezh Oblast. Children from the orphanage can be seen in the background. Most probably, Anna Gąsowska is sitting on the left in the first row. Helena Wojno is sitting first on the right in the last row.

The Gąsowski family was deported from Czyżew railway station in June 1941. The Soviets deported Anna Gąsowska with her four children and sister Helena Wojno. Czesław Gąsowski was not deported with his family. He was taken form the carriage by the Soviets and arrested. He was supposed to be executed but the sentence was not carried out. After some time, he escaped and returned home. His family was first sent to Komi Republic, near Syktyvkar. After the announcement of the amnesty, they moved to the city of Novy Oskol. Helena and Anna started working in the orphanage there: Helena as a teacher, Anna as a deputy chief accountant. Mrs Fedak (?) was the headmistress of a Polish school which operated  within the orphanage.
