Soldiers of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division, The Middle East, 1942

8/03/2023

Na zdjęciu widać pięciu żołnierzy w płaszczach i furażerkach na głowach

The 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division was formed in May 1942 in Qastina in the then-territory of Palestine as a result of a merger of the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade and the 9th and 10th Infantry Divisions. The backbone of this unit was volunteers dismissed from Soviet forced-labour camps and evacuated to the Middle East. Antoni Ościłowski (in the photograph he is standing first on the left) was one of them. He was deported with his wife in 1940. He was a sapper in the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division.

Who were his friends in the photograph? Where was it taken?
