After 17 September 1939, Bazyli Kuc was arrested by the NKVD and sent to the Komi Republic. The Soviets must have known about the fact that he was a social activist and that he had become a local Civil Defense commissioner just before the outbreak of the war. They also remembered that during the Russian Revolution he had fought against the Bolsheviks, so after becoming a prisoner of war he was sentenced to death, which he miraculously avoided.
