Renia Jackowska’s teddy bear

1/09/2022

The picture shows a toy bearThis teddy bear belonged to Renia Jackowska, who was only 7 years old when she and her mother were sent to the Irkutsk region in Siberia. After the “amnesty”, they left the Soviet Union in 1942. They ended up in Ain Karem in the western part of Jerusalem. Here, their fate was intertwined with that of the Świderski family, who lived in the same house. Basia Świderska had no toys of her own, so she fell in love with Renia’s teddy bear and could not part with it. However, when in 1946 the Jackowskis were allowed to leave for England, Renia decided to give the teddy to Basia, who kept it for the next few decades.
