Walenty Jabłoński’s watch

Small old watchThis inconspicuous, dilapidated watch was bought by 13-year-old Walenty Jabłoński at the end of the Second World War in a bazaar in Grodno. The Jabłoński family remained in the Eastern Borderlands after the war, and Walenty himself began to study medicine after completing secondary school. However, in 1952 he was deported with his loved ones to Kazakhstan, where he remained until 1956. Of the watch, Walenty Jabłoński said: “at that time it was a thing really difficult to obtain. At the time of my deportation, I had the watch with me. In Kazakhstan, I wore it on my wrist every day. It made my life so much easier. I was always punctual at work. Besides, I gained the respect of other people. The watch was a big thing. Everyone asked me what time it was…”.
