From Bari in Italy, Wala went to Liverpool. The beginnings were not at all easy: there were a longing for the Vilnius region, and the lack of knowledge of the language. However Wala’s innate optimism did not leave her. First, she became a stenographer in an English company. Later she worked in the Polish Section of the BBC in London. She developed her artistic passions under the guidance of the painter and teacher Marian Bohusz-Szyszko, who painted her portrait. In the third and last part of Elżbieta Smoleńska’s interview with Waleria Sawicka, memories from exile also return.
