On 10 February 1940, during the first mass deportation of Polish citizens from the occupied territories, the Soviets deported to Siberia, among others, Wacław Bzik, a forester from the Sokółka Forest District, and his wife Stanisława. In 1941, after the so-called amnesty was announced (under the “Sikorski-Majski Agreement”), Wacław volunteered to join the Polish army being formed in the Soviet Union, the so-called Anders Army. As a soldier of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division, he went with it along the entire combat route through Italy, also taking part in the Battle of Monte Cassino. He was decorated several times for his battles on the Italian front, receiving, among others, The Italy Star and The War Medal 1939-1945.
